23 Jun: National Seminar On Open Document Format

The department of management sciences, Indian Institute of Technology, Delhi, in association with NIC, is conducting the first National Seminar on Open Document Format, today.

The one-day event, underway at IIT-Delhi, seeks to focus on the impact of ODF on India and the Indian governments, as well as to increase the awareness of the issue. Industry biggies like IBM, TCS, Red Hat, Novell and other members of India-ODF Alliance will participate at the event. The event will feature an exclusive session with representatives of some of these companies. Besides, institutions like IIT Bombay, CDAC, OSSRC, ICEG, ODFAlliance, IIM Ahmedabad will also be present at the seminar.

The seminar is expected to rope in speakers like R. Chandrashekhar, additional secretary-IT, Government of India; Kiran Karnik, president, NASSCOM; Rajdeep Sahrawat, VP-NASSCOM; Prof Dass, IIM Ahmedabad; Dr M. Moni, NIC; Dr Rajagopalan, CDAC; and Sukhbir Singh, BIS.

The speakers will deliberate on topics like `Open Standards and the Indian Industry’; `Why ODF: India-ODF Alliance’; `Economic Impact of ODF’; `Relevance of ODF in India’; `Impact of ODF on India’; `ODF and e-governance’; and `Local Language Support for ODF’.

IIT-Kharagpur Ready With India First Robotic Under-Sea Vehicle

IIT-Kharagpur has developed India’s first autonomous underwater vehicle (AUV), which can bring back deep-sea images, read oceanographic data, collect water samples and perform military surveillance like pin-pointing sea mines planted by enemies. The wireless, intelligent vehicle (see photo) is fitted with a computer and can manoeuvre on its own upto 150 metres under sea for at least five hours. Examination stress and performance anxiety apparently forced yet another student of the Indian Institute of Technology-Kanpur (IIT-K) to commit suicide on Thursday. J Bhardwaja, a third year civil engineering student, brought his life to a gory end by placing his head under the wheels of an oncoming train in front of the institutes main gate. E-Learning Project To Be Launched Soon

Students of state-run technical institutes will now have direct access to prominent faculties of the Indian Institute of Technology-Kanpur (IIT-K) from the coming session. The state technical education department has decided to introduce the promising e- learning project in five technical institutes from the coming session. The IIT-K would not only provide technical assistance in the project, but its faculties would give lectures to students of these five institutes through e-learning at regular intervals. Fuel cells can power vehicle sans pollution FUEL CELLS have enormous potential and efficiency to power cars, trucks and buses without emitting harmful tailpipe emissions. This can capture 40 to 60 per cent or more of a fuels energy to power vehicles with low or zero emissions.
