ADS Marg At IIT To Get Two Pedestrian Subways From MMRDA

The pressing issue of pedestrian crossing near IIT gate, Powai was brought to notice of Civic Affairs Committee , Consumer Guidance Society of India (CGSI) by one of its members Ms Asha Panemangalore, who is an ex-IIT Professor, sometime back. CGSI had written to both Jt.CP (Traffic) and concerned area DMC for provision of Traffic signals. Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) has agreed in principle to provision for two pedestrian subways near the two main entrance gates of the IIT campus. The demand has been made in the context of massive road widening work that will be undertaken as part of the Jogeshwari-Vikhroli Link Road (JVLR) project under the Mumbai Urban Transport Project (MUTP).

The two subways at this pint will cost MMRDA Rs 5 crore. These subways are particularly required to cross the road because the main road in front of IIT, Adi Shankaracharya Marg (ADS Marg), will be widened from the current 25 metres to as much as 40-45 metres. We have agreed to construct two subways for IIT. The road widening will claim around 10,946 square metres of the IIT campus. MMRDA is going to rebuild all the structures which will have to go because of the work, said Milind Mahiskar, the joint metropolitan commissioner (MUTP).

Commenting on this development AV Shenoy of CGSI said, I think it is really good news. There has been continuous demand for a pedestrian crossing near IIT Gate from the local residents. As this road is going to be widened under JVLR it would have been impossible for these residents to cross the road. We feel that MMRDA needs to consider similar subways along ADS Marg near Hiranandani entrance and at MHADA/Shipping Corp before the L&T flyover to avoid accidents. Let them plan these now itself.

It assumes that regulatory agencies can second-guess the sectors where demand is likely as well as the appropriate content of education. Ironically, India met some demands of the IT sector, because a large number of private institutions managed to dodge the regulatory system by offering diplomas rather than degrees In many breathless foreign reports about India’s outsourcing clout, the nation’s education often gets high marks for being the source of so much success.
