Astronomical cut-offs fuel CEE debate

The SRCC helpdesk on Monday was flooded with distraught 95-percenters wanting to find out the possibility of a second list.

Hardly any, they were told, with 220 B Com (hons) seats getting 309 students within the 96.5% bar.St Stephen’s College put out a notice for those “with very high marks"who are “upset on not finding their names on the selection list", talking about how with a interview cut-off of 97% for English (hons), many 97- percenters and above will not get through.

“It must not be seen as a reflection on one’s individual abilities,"the notice says. Two instances of how CBSE’s stress on de-stressing has given rise to a unique situation, where even a 90% may not mean anything when it comes to college admissions.

This had led to principals and DU’s powers-that-be to seriously debate the pros and cons of the university starting its own entrance test, along the lines of SAT or GRE.

Says pro vice-chancellor S K Tandon: “There is no difference between a child who gets 91% and one who gets 98%. It is a question of how much confidence we place in our school-leaving examinations, and of demand and supply.

Maybe we could look at setting a base level criteria for a centralised university entrance examination like a JEE. If getting into DU with commerce is as prestigious as getting into an IIT, then what is the harm in a similar selection method?”

But he is quick to point out the problems that may arise, given DU’s federal structure and the way it views the diversity among its colleges as one of its strengths.

The diversity extends to the admission process too - St Stephen’s has an interview, LSR has an “interaction". Most colleges have entrance tests for English and Journalism. And almost every college has introduced a set of riders in their selection process - adding to students’ woes.

Says Kirorimal principal, Bhim Sen Singh: “It is high time the university started its own entrance examination. There are states where examinations are held at knife-point, cheating is rampant, marking system is more lenient. It is just not fair to club all students in the same category. The entrance examination will ensure uniformity of evaluation. When kids with such high marks don’t get into the colleges of their choice, they go into depression, which is very unfortunate.”

Mr Wareing, of the Michelin-starred Pétrus restaurant in London, added: 'In most people's locals, the menu rarely gets better than tinned soup, stale sandwiches or a heap of tasteless meat that's been deep-fried to hell and back.
