CBI Raids Passport Office

The anti-corruption wing of the central bureau of investigations (CBI) conducted simultaneous searches at two locations, along with the office premises of the regional passport office (RPO) in Lucknow on Thursday in connection with an anti-corruption case against an upper divisional clerk (UDC).

A preliminary inquiry was underway for months against the accused UDC and CBI formally registered a criminal case against him at their Lucknow office on Wednesday.

Sources in the CBI categorically denied that the search had anything to with the recent incident in Kanpur where some students of the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) lodged a complaint with the president of India accusing two persons of extortion in the name of getting their passport issued.

A resident of LDA colony on Kanpur road UDC Sandeep Shukla was posted at the RPO Lucknow for more than five years now. According to CBI investigations, going by the known sources of income Shukla had earned an estimated Rs 8 lakh by way of salary and there was no other known source for him to make a living.

However as per the details collected buy the CBI, Shukla has been found in possession of unaccounted property estimated over Rs 25 lakh.

“His father is a retired financial advisor from the RDSO while his remaining two brothers were unemployed till the youngest of the three got a job recently,” said a member of the search team talking to TOI.

About the property of Shukla, CBI sources said that apart from the LDA colony house. Shukla also owned a 3200 square feet of land in prime pocket of Alambagh, behind Awadh Hospital.

“Though in the records the land is valued at Rs 5 lakhs but its actual price at the time if its purchase is estimated to be a few lakhs more than that,” the CBI source said.

The CBI exercise began with a five member team entering the passport office on Ashok Marg in Hazratganj at 9:20 am as per the visitor’s entry register.

Led by deputy superintendent of police (DySP) Dewendra Rai and RK Tripathi, the team quietly watched the functioning and public dealing of the staff there for nearly an hour before they introduced themselves formally with the authorities present.

It was round this time that another team entered the E 213 residence of Shukla and began their search operation. The documents seized by the CBI and inventory of items valued was being compiled by the sleuths till late in the evening and further details were awaited.

More College Seats To Lower Castes

When Nitin Kamble was growing up, a career in information technology was unimaginable. He was, after all, born into a low-caste community, and raised in a tiny hamlet in rural India. Facing discrimination and large loans from upper-caste members of his village, his destiny, he thought, would forever remain rooted to the grind and dust of his father's arid farm. Now posted in Amsterdam as a consultant with a multinational company, the 30-year-old Mr. Kamble says that none of his success would have been achieved without the chance to attend university through an affirmative-action system for lower caste students like himself.
