Central Universities to add 5,754 seats

Central Universities are expected to add as many as 5,754 seats during 2007-08 following the implementation of the 27 per cent OBC reservation in the Central Government-funded institutions of higher learning.

Of the 17 Central Universities, Delhi University alone will add 3,142 seats followed by Allahabad University with 1,134 seats, Banaras Hindu University 447 seats and Jamia Milia Islamia 301, the Outcome Budget of Department of Higher Education said on Tuesday.

The report of the Outcome Budget placed on the table of Parliament said that a plan outlay of Rs 576 crore has been earmarked in the 2007-08 Budget.

Quotas for OBC students in central educational institutions may necessarily have to be staggered. And the University Grants Commission says it’ll cost about Rs 9,000 crore, over five times their annual budget. These have come out of the deliberations of several of the five sub-groups constituted by the oversight committee, chaired by Veerappa Moily, looking into the matter. The sub-group on central universities, headed by Syed Hamid, Chancellor of Jamia Hamdard University, favoured reservations in one go, and estimated a cost of Rs 4,800 cr. New Format For IIT-JEE Has Borne Fruit: Ministry

The new format of the Joint Entrance Examination (JEE) to the Indian Institutes of Technology has borne fruit, according to the Union Human Resources Development (HRD) Ministry as the number of candidates who cleared this entrance test in the first attempt has gone up from 28.49 per cent in 2005 to 43.50 per cent. Basing its claim on an analysis done by IIT Kharagpur — which conducted the JEE this year — the Ministry in a statement said this was the result of making a first division or equivalent at the Class XII level mandatory for appearing in the JEE

NITs to have finishing schools

In an effort to improve employability levels of engineering graduates, the ministry of human resource and development will open finishing schools in seven National Institutes of Technology (NITs) and at IIT-Roorkee on a pilot basis in the ensuing months of May-June. The NITs, which will house the schools include Trichy, Surathkal (Karnataka), Warangal, Jaipur, Durgapur, Kozhikode and Kurukshetra. IIT-K to make rust-free rail tracks The Bhilai Steel Plant today signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Indian Institute of Technology-Kanpur on a Rs 150-lakh project to make corrosion-resistant railway tracks. Bharat Lal, general manager (mills and quality), Bhilai Steel Plant, said with track corrosion posing a major danger for the railways, IIT-K would device corrosion preventive methods that are economically viable. The disqualification of 10 students of BE-I, Punjab Engineering College (PEC), for poor academic performance, has sparked off a debate in the college.
