City to get its first wireless campus soonKolkata is set to have an academic institution that can boast of its own broadcasting studio, perhaps the first in this part of the country. Located in Tollygunge, the sprawling 1,50,000 square feet campus of the NSHM Institute of Media Communications (NIMC) and the NSHM Business School (NBS), promises to offer a diverse range of state-of-the art facilities when it opens its doors to students this academic year. Modelled on lines of its Durgapur counterpart, the twin institutes will have many firsts to their credit. The NSHM Academy, promoted by the Synergy Group, SPS Group and Multicon, will be the “first wireless campus” in the eastern region. “The campus will have facilities of video-conferencing and online classes. Cameras will be installed at all the venues to allow for a more interactive session,” said Cecil Antony, chief mentor, NSHM Academy. Moreover, students can also fall back on “backhand data servers” that will provide them with recordings of classes they have missed. The USP of the institutes are the various technical tie-ups which supplement the basic courses. “Certificate courses and collaborations with foreign universities are packaged with courses for value addition,” Antony said. For instance, the NSHM has entered into a tie-up with IIT Delhi for its B School. “We have ORACLE as the workforce development partner for our BCA and BBA courses. The students of insurance and risk management can simultaneously pursue a certificate course offered by the Indian Insurance Institute,” said Antony. In order to promote the all-round development of the students’ personality, the institutes will incorporate a lifestyle management programme into the course itself. “Students will be given lessons in driving and sports. We are hoping to tie-up with cultural groups such as “Padatik” and sports clubs,” said Antony. But the NSHM Academy management claimed that the course fees will be at par with other premiere institutes. “The fees for the undergraduate courses in media studies will be around Rs 50,000 while that for the PG courses is expected to be around Rs 45000 per semester for a three-semester course,” said Antony.
