DPS Turns Down CBSE Topper

Education is supposed to be the big leveler in our society. It is a ladder that overcomes economic, religious and caste differences.

However, 16-year-old Garima Godara found out that even though she had topped her class X CBSE exams, scoring 97.6 per cent, she was rejected by the acclaimed Delhi Public School.

Garima belongs to a Delhi village that is close to the Delhi Public School in Dwarka and was hoping that her brilliant academic performance would help her enter the school.

Although she passed the school’s entrance exam, she couldn’t clear the interview. In fact, all the nine students admitted to the school have lower marks than her.

“I don’t know why the DPS people said no. My daughter is so good. She has always been good. Maybe they wanted donation,” said Naresh Devi, Garima’s mother.

The family, distraught over the rejection, says that they fail to understand the school’s reasons.

“We are willing to do whatever it takes for our daughter. We sold off the land we had so that we can prepare for her future. She can study however long she wants,” said Garima’s father.

DPS explains

The school, on the other hand, was unapologetic about rejecting her. In fact, they informed that the Garima simply didn’t fit their profile, and rejecting her had nothing to do with her marks.

“The CBSE marks don’t mean anything to us. We have certain criteria about the kind of children we want. She wasn’t able to speak English properly and that was also a problem,” said Aruna Ummat, Principal, DPS Dwarka.

The school says that CBSE marks can’t be a fair criterion, but the family questions how could they be rejected just because they don’t speak English with the right accent or don’t have enough money.

Looking forward

However, the only heartening aspect of this entire situation is that Garima realises that she will face many such challenges in the future and is prepared to take them head on.

“I don’t think that I because I am from a village, I have to dress differently or speak differently. We come from different backgrounds, but we can all be doing the same thing. I want to be an IAS officer, and my role models are my parents,” said Garima.

In fact, after DPS rejected Garima, her family got her admitted to another private school and enrolled her for extra IIT coaching classes.

They all believe that Garima cannot be held down, for she is meant to rise.
