Flextronics new universityFlextronics is all set to start off their own “university” to produce the kind of engineers they want. To avoid competition with fellow IT companies to attract the existing supply of engineers, Flextronics is investing in its innovative methods to fight the talent-crunch. Based on Infosys’ Learning Center, the new establishment within the company will aim to skill a non-electronic/electrical engineer to work on par with an electronic/electrical engineer. Flextronics, which was recently acquired by Kohlberg Kravis Roberts, plans to increase its intake of freshers from about 1500 in the last placement session to 5000 per year in the next three years, with a majority of them being non-engineers including post-graduates in mathematics and sciences form principal universities. “Not enough number of electrical / electronic engineers are graduating from reputed colleges to meet our growing demand. So we decided to diversify our growing base and then put freshers through the course at a center to bring all at par,” said Arun Kumar, President and Managing Director, Flextronics Software Systems. The center will include managerial and project management courses on par with the Indian Institute of Management (IIM) and other leading institutions. With an attrition rate of about 16 percent, Flextronics believes that this proposal would reduce their hiring costs as well as lower the attrition rate and broaden the talent pool. The decision to hire non-engineers was taken after experimenting its success with the current year’s placement session. With a current rate of 10-12 campuses and a recruitment of about 1500 annually, Flextronics is planning to shoot figures to 20-25 campuses and 2,500 to 3,000 engineering and non-engineering graduates with this scheme. The company projects an increase to 30-35 campuses with 4,500 to 5,000 recruitments by 2009. The initial investment in the project is about $2 million (Rs9 crore) and the recurring expenditure on training has been estimated to be around $1 million. The center has been set up in consultation with IIT’s and IIM’s and will have full time faculty and company managers and engineers teaching on part-time basis. Source : http://www.siliconindia.com/
