GLAM brings Liam Sullivan to IIT

lying in from Los Angeles, actor/comedian Liam Sullivan visited IIT on Wednesday, April 18 to perform his routine A Liam Show, a collection of short films, monologues, music videos and songs. Liam has gained recent popularity on YouTube from his comedic videos, the most popular of which is titled Shoes, where he plays a shoe obsessed teen named Kelly.

Liam brought in a huge crowd and big laughs, not only from IIT students and faculty, but from college students from all over the Chicago area who flocked to the HUB auditorium for the show. One visiting student was even spotted dressed up in a Kelly outfit. The show featured several of Liams familiar videos as well as some work not found on the web. All the videos were well received by the audience. Towards the end of the performance, Liam emerged on stage dressed as Kelly, and sang a few songs live for the audience. Following the hour long performance, Kelly stayed to meet with students for photos and autographs.

Students crowded around, some waiting for over an hour for the opportunity to get a photo and have a few words with the performer. The show was organized by campus club GLAM (Gays, Lesbians and More) and was the kickoff to their Night of Noise celebration, which included Liams performance, followed by a party in the BOG, attended by Liam and many of the students who came to the show.

Mobile Advertising Behind Expectations—Time Required

Mobile Advertising Behind Expectations—Time Required Chetan Sharma has a post up on a panel he chaired at the PAN-IIT event on Mobile Advertising - Technical Challenges and Business Opportunities. An interesting thing to look at is what the mobile advertising industry was forecast to be by 2005 by analysts at the turn of the century—between $890 million and $6.8 billion. In 2006 the actual mobile advertising market was $421 million. On the panel everyone was bullish about the industry (not surprising since theyre all in the industry, Infospace, Medio, Google, Voicebox) but they cautioned it will take time because the reach

IIT-D lowers bar to beef up faculty

IIT-D lowers bar to beef up faculty The figures — compiled by IIT-Delhi Alumni Association — belong to 2004. But two years and 60 recruitments on, the faculty is still small enough for the institution to take two important steps: Advertising for young blood and lowering eligibility criteria in some sections. While Prof Surendra Prasad, director of IIT-D, argues that recruitments in the last three years and the increase in retirement age have brought down the number of teachers nearing retirement age, IIT-Delhi evidently needs more. So it is hiring again. And the focus this time is on attracting faculty that

IIT Students Seek Action Against Dean

The quota controversy refuses to die down — at least in IIT Delhi. In the latest twist in the quota protests, representatives of the Pan IIT Foundation for Rural Development (PIFort) have lodged a police complaint against the Dean, Director and some senior members of the management for allegedly threatening students demonstrating peacefully against caste-based reservations. The students said they would approach the judicial magistrate if no action is taken. The police confirmed that they had received the complaint, but said that no case had been registered so far. The row erupted on Friday. “The students were sitting on a relay hunger

Click And Upload, Print And Deliver

It is a dotcom that hopes to make money from pictures. Banking on the sentiments of Indians who hold family albums very dear, two techies, both graduates from IIT Bombay, have launched Picsquare, a website which will print and deliver digital photos posted on it anywhere in the country. But what is unique in this venture? Manish Agrawal (26) found that Indians in the US had a tiring time sharing happy moments immediately with their parents and friends back home, many of whom preferred holding prints in their hand than seeing a digital image on a computer screen. One can

Cellsman: At ease with shampoos & DVDs too

Cellsman: At ease with shampoos & DVDs too No one was surprised when Finland-based Nokia chose D Shivakumar to head their business in India. For the 45-year-old Shivakumar the challenge was to make a greater success of an already successful brand - a tough legacy to live up to. But most felt Shivakumar would deliver: in corporate circles he is perceived as someone who thrives on challenges, and a marketeer who sees brands through the eye of the consumer. Besides, being a gentleman, many had the best wishes for him. Increasing market share is not easy, when you already command close to 80%.

Battle for Brand IIT

IT was a warm sunny day in the land of dreams. Young men and women were gathered under a tree to protest against the atrocities carried out by the State; men with blaring megaphones voicing instructions, women in jeans and designer sunglasses surging politely but determinedly towards visitors for signatures on a petition that beseeched the nation's President to agree to their demands. This slightly surreal picture describes one protest rally peopled by NRIs in the richest part of the richest area of the richest country in the world. This was a Sunday afternoon in the Fair Oaks Park in
