IBM, IIT Join HandsIBM and Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Mumbai have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to develop technology capabilities of common interest through collaborative research. IBM and IIT Mumbai will jointly develop technologies and capabilities in areas like autonomic computing, grid computing, deep computing, databases, web services, network management, and security amongst others. Under the umbrella of IBM’s Centre for Advanced Studies (CAS) program the objective of this MoU is to equip technical talent at the grassroots levels with greater understanding of emerging technologies. Speaking about the MoU, Harish Grama, vice president, IBM India Software Labs, stated that the IBM CAS program plays a significant role in bringing together academia, government, and industry research organizations. Their MoU with IIT Mumbai is a step in this direction. Grama further briefed that in an evolving world, students need to continuously develop their skills to work on new and innovative technologies. Through this MoU, IBM will enable students to be a part of the technology ready workforce. Meanwhile, IBM will undertake the sponsorship of Ph.D, M.Tech, and MS (Res) students for their research work on the chosen themes of mutual collaborative interest; provide technology support that would enable students in their research projects; and collaborate on research programs with chosen faculty. Adding to it, Ashok Misra, director, IIT Mumbai, explained that they are very glad that IBM, under the CAS program, is signing an MoU with IIT Mumbai to develop technologies and capabilities of common interest and engage in collaborative research initially in the areas of computer science and information technology. Misra also said that this MoU would enable a long-term partnership between IBM, an industry leader and IIT Mumbai an academic institute of excellence.
