IIT Bombay exhibits masterpieces

From collapsible bamboo bar stools to workstations for people with cerebral palsy, the Degree Design Show by IIT-Bombays Industrial Design Centre has it all. A number of designs have been sanctioned and designed by corporates.

The youngsters behind the machines have designed a number of socially relevant products for the less privileged.

Sarabjit Singh Kalsis workstation for cerebral palsy patients has a circular grip at the base of the rotating chair that keeps it in place, a C-shaped table that helps the patient maintain the right posture and an abductor in the chair that separates the persons legs, as crossing the legs is harmful to those with cerebral palsy.

Globetrotting for Seminars

Second year MBA at VGSOM, IIT Kharagpur Amandeep Singh recounts what it takes to be invited to the Harvard College Asian Business Forum. It’s amazing how expectations and perceptions can take a 180 degree twist when you probe just a little deeper from the surface. As in all b-schools, the group mail can either be Pandora’s Box or the lost treasure of Genghis Khan. I came across an email asking me to participate in the Harvard College Asian Business Forum (HCABF). My first impression – Eh? Harvard in India? I wondered if this was another one of the gimmicks by

MMRDA Ready With Sops To Bypass IIT Roadblock

The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) has devised a compromise formula to give impetus to the 10.3-km, six-lane Jogeshwari-Vikhroli Link Road (JVLR) project. Work on Section 2 of the project, on a 3-km stretch between Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Powai, and Kanjurmarg, had been moving at a snail’s pace because of the IIT’s reluctance to release 10,000 sq-mt land. The MMRDA has now proposed special compensation for the IIT to take the project ahead. JVLR is one of two road overbridges being constructed under the World Bank-aided Mumbai Urban Transport Project (MUTP). The MMRDA wants the IIT

England Chances A Lot Better Now

England's chances of doing something special in Germany are a lot better now than at the start of this tournament and for me, that is down to the system they are now employing. I hope Sven-Goran Eriksson stays with this system, opting for the right players in the right position depending on the opposition. Even though the system England had against Ecuador is talked about as one player up front, it is how your other attacking midfield players arrive to create unease in a defence which makes all the difference. Wayne Rooney arriving alone is a handful, but easy enough

Are IIT students too materialistic The Indian Institute of Technology is one of Indias most prestigious colleges and IITians feel brains, big bucks and jobs at MNCs sets them apart from the others in the rat race. That may sound a bit materialistic. But IITians have been told to nudge their social conscience by President Abdul Kalam. An opinion that is shared by fellow students from colleges out of the IIT league. Mostly they try and crack the JE because they know that once they get in, they will get an assured job. After an IIT degree, they will go for an MBA
