IIT-D lowers bar to beef up faculty

IIT-D lowers bar to beef up faculty

The figures — compiled by IIT-Delhi Alumni Association — belong to 2004. But two years and 60 recruitments on, the faculty is still small enough for the institution to take two important steps: Advertising for young blood and lowering eligibility criteria in some sections.

While Prof Surendra Prasad, director of IIT-D, argues that recruitments in the last three years and the increase in retirement age have brought down the number of teachers nearing retirement age, IIT-Delhi evidently needs more. So it is hiring again. And the focus this time is on attracting faculty that are not only exceptionally bright and motivated but also young, preferably below 35 years. While fresh recruitment will be made for about 125 seats across all departments, schools and centres, applicants have been asked to apply throughout the year.

We would like to hire as many as possible. The plan is to recruit at least 50 faculty members per year for the next 10 years, says Prof B N Jain, Deputy Director (Faculty). The average rate of recruitment at the institute has been 25 every year, which, Jain says, only takes care of the retirement and attrition rate. The student intake in B.Tech and M.Tech courses has substantially risen since 1994. We will ideally want a teacher-student ratio of 9:1 against the existing 12:1. The shortage has not crippled us, but it is restricting us from thinking big, he admits. Jain says with students drifting away from research, there are very few good candidates available.

Panels lame attempt to plump for Medak

Panels lame attempt to plump for Medak The report of the high-powered committee on the location for setting up an IIT is confusing and wishy-washy at best. In fact, former AICTE chairman Prof R Natarajan, Indian Institute of Science associate director Prof N Balakrishnan and IIIT, Hyderabad, director Prof Rajeev Sanghal in their report merely said: Kandi site in Medak district is more appropriate and a suitable location for an IIT. However, the government claimed on Sunday that the committee recommended Kandi to set up the proposed IIT. Interestingly, the decision of the committee is summed up in just one paragraph

Dean of research and development and professor of electrical engineering at the IIT-K Prof SC Srivastava said that this was the first-of-its-kind cell where there was direct conversion of chemical energy into electrical energy. More over the technology was environment-friendly. Prof Srivastava was here to attend an international conference on "Challenges and strategies for

Six-point development programme for hill populations

Six-point development programme for hill populations There are two models for development of hill people. The common one is the Isolationist. The United States has adopted that approach to protect American Indians and preserve their culture. American Indians have exclusive spaces for themselves, called Reservations, and special laws to govern them. Indian politicians, administrators, intellectuals and social activists, too, favour this approach. The second, rarely visualised, option is Integrationist. Switzerland and Iceland are its most successful examples. It is an outgoing approach. It is export-oriented and integrates its economy with the rest of the world. While the Isolationist Model excludes outsiders,

From research labs to the market If a group of scientists from Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) have their way, people could soon be driving in a hydrogen fuel cell-powered mini car that could double up as a power generator. Thats not all. Thanks to their research efforts, people could also be growing vegetables like cauliflower, cabbage, tomato and onion, in inaccessible, high altitude and snow-bound regions of the country.
