IIT Delhi to Suggest MRTS for Shimla

Troubled by the severe problem of traffic congestion, Shimla’s desperation to have a Mass Rapid Transport System (MRTS) has finally found favour with the state government. The government has entrusted the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) at Delhi with the task of carrying out studies for assessing the technical and financial viability of constructing and operating an efficient MRTS in the town.

State Tourism and Transport Minister G S Bali informed that the state government had recently sanctioned a Rs 12 lakh research project to the IIT and its report would be submitted within six months. He was talking to mediapersons after inaugurating the E-Governance Centre at the Directorate of Transportation here today.

Bali said , ‘‘Owing to the congestion on the Circular Cart Road, the first phase of the MRTS would be implemented on it. And more parking spaces would be developed outside the town, which would be connected with a feeder transportation system to the main town.’’ The proposal for implementation of the MRTS has been sent to the Ministry of Urban Development under the Jawaharlal Nehru Urban Renewal Mission (JNURM).

Replying to a question, Bali said that the problem of overloading in the buses was one of the serious concerns of the department. ‘‘We would soon initiate a statewide surprise drive against the habitual defaulters and anyone found guilty would be challaned heavily,’’ he said. But that too would only be a temporary check on the problem. The final solution for it would be the implementation of the MRTS.

Licence in 24 hrs
No more long queues and endless waiting for works like getting driving licences, registration certificates or vehicle permits. Getting one now would be possible within 24 hours after the fee is deposited. If the office fails to stick to the deadline, some percentage of the user charges will not be charged from the applicants.

State Tourism and Transport Minister G S Bali informed that the E-Governance Centre would cater to needs of the public by providing information and documents within a prescribed time limit. This will also eliminate the possibility of bogus driving licences and detect the tax defaulters at the transport barriers. Eleven transport barriers have already been computerised.

My list didnt lead to IIT suicide

Three days after the IIT-Kanpur campus was rocked by a third-year engineering students suicide, among the likely reasons for J Bharadwajas suicide, offered by a section of students, is a harsh e-mail sent by a faculty member. The e-mail, sent to all students, listed roll numbers of those likely to get an F-grade. With speculations about the reason behind the suicide rife both within

Pub Meals Worse Than Plane Food

Pub grub was never exactly cordon bleu but now it has suffered the ultimate insult - and been branded even worse than airline food. Leading chef Marcus Wareing claims airlines have 'upped their game' and standards are now 'simply higher' than the 'pathetic' offerings found on the ground. Mr Wareing, of the Michelin-starred Pétrus restaurant in London, added: 'In most people's locals, the menu rarely gets better than tinned soup, stale sandwiches or a heap of tasteless meat that's been deep-fried to hell and back. 'If you want a decent bite to eat, you'd be better off getting on a
