IIT K to develop Safety systems for puplines against EarthquakeTHE INDIAN Institute of Technology (IIT-K) has been asked to develop a system to ensure safety of the oil and water pipelines during earthquake. The project has been given to the civil engineering department of the institute. According to a senior professor at the IIT-K civil engineering department Dr Sudhir K Jain, the scientists were in the process of developing a technique to protect the underground oil and gas pipelines from earthquake effects.He said the existing technology, for laying underground oil and gas pipelines, was obsolete and failed to withstand the intensity of the earthquakes that frequently hit several parts of the country. This was the largest donation by the former students to IIT Kanpur. Former student Udai Pratap Singh said the batch would provide financial assistance for scholarship to needy students. He said the 1972 batch had been considering to provide Rs 5 lakh to the institute. Two students, Kamal Aggarwal and Rakesh Gandhi, had promised $ 1 lakh each for establishing the faculty chairs, the biggest ever donation to create chairs.
