IIT-Kharagpur gets its own law course

It has the IIT tag, but isnt a technical institution. It is the first-ever law school that focuses on intellectual property rights (IPR), property and tech law and will be up and running in July.

In July, Kharagpur-based Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) will open its gates for the first-ever batch of students at what it calls the Rajiv Gandhi School of Intellectual Property Law.

Based on a decision by the HRD ministry, it is also the only law school to be run by an IIT. Incidentally, IIT-Kharagpur was also the first IIT to start a business school — Vinod Gupta School of Management — five years ago.

If the experiment is successful, the ministry of human resource development plans to start law schools in the other IITs as well.

The law school will start functioning from July 24. To start with, it would have two kinds of degrees — regular three-year residential LLB degree and a one-and-a-half year post-graduate part-time non-residential diploma.

While classes for the former will be held at the IIT-Kharagpur campus, classes for the latter will be held in the institutes second campus at Salt Lake.

We will be different from other law schools because no one else teaches intellectual property law as a full-fledged course. We will also teach law related to technology — also not taught anywhere else in the country.

These are areas which law schools based in the US, like George Washington University Law School, have just ventured into, said Probir Gupta, senior teacher at the institute and also the law schools spokesperson.

Unlike other law schools that accepts ordinary graduates, this one is aiming at a niche group — engineers, doctors and MBAs. A majority of 60 students who have got through in the two courses have the MBA-cum-engineering background.

All candidates who satisfied the eligibility criteria were made to sit for a national level admission test. We have selected 40 of the best for our LLB course, said Gupta.

England Chances A Lot Better Now

England's chances of doing something special in Germany are a lot better now than at the start of this tournament and for me, that is down to the system they are now employing. I hope Sven-Goran Eriksson stays with this system, opting for the right players in the right position depending on the opposition. Even though the system England had against Ecuador is talked about as one player up front, it is how your other attacking midfield players arrive to create unease in a defence which makes all the difference. Wayne Rooney arriving alone is a handful, but easy enough
