IIT-Powai To Set Up Campus In GujaratGujarat may soon get an Indian Institute of Technology. And this is how: IIT-Bombay (Powai) campus is likely to set foot in Gujarat next year. Seen as an extension of the Powai campus, this proposal could be a fallout of the decision to increase in student intake once the 27 per cent OBC reservation is implemented. A meeting of Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi and state education department officials with Dr Ashok Misra, director of IIT Bombay, is scheduled to be held in Gandhinagar on July 21. Confirming the meeting, state principal secretary (education) P Panneervel said IIT-Bombay’s objective to set up a campus in Gujarat is to accommodate additional intake at the institute. The ministry of human resource development has permitted IIT-Bombay to look at neighbouring states to extend its campus if their existing one at Powai falls short of infrastructure to accommodate the rise in student intake. “The Gujarat government will act as a facilitator,” Panneervel told TOI. The IITs are established under the Institutes of Technology Act, 1961 and governed by an apex body known as the council of the IITs with the Union minister for HRD as the chairman. Every year about 1,100 students obtain their degrees from IIT-Mumbai whereas there are 5,000 students on campus, at any time. Emphasising that reservation is not the reason for the plan, Misra told TOI, “Every year in India 40 lakh students pass at the 10+2 level. Compared to this, the number of seats in IITs is quite less. Our objective is to therefore set up a second campus to accommodat e more students". Currently, the number of students who would find space on the Gujarat campus is uncertain, said Misra. “It depends on how much land the Gujarat government can spare,” he said. The campus is likely to be set up on the Sarkhej-Gandhinagar highway, or towards the airport, on 100 acres land. “We can initially provide the institute 10,000 sq feet of built space on existing premises like LD Engineering College to start operations till a separate campus is built,” Panneervel said. For this the Narmada Valley Development Authority ( NVDA) will conduct a high level technical study in the Narmada basin. An official communiqué stated that the study would be arranged by IIT Roorkee. Besides major hydel power projects being constructed in the Vale there is large quantum of unemployed hydel power potentials in the Narmada basin. Looking at the present and future power demand in the State, there is great need to exploit even smallest hydel power potential.
