IIT Relents To Move Campus WallThe World Bank funded JVLR (Jogeshwari-Vikroli Link Road) project which was facing a snag as IIT (Indian Institute of Technology) was refusing to move its Powai campus wall 7 metres back to enable the road widening work, has finally relented and given a green signal. IIT got the approval from its Board of Directors and has sent it to the Human Resources Development (HRD) Ministry. Though IIT has agreed verbally the official agreement from the ministry is still awaited. If the plan to move the wall comes through it would mean the demolition of 9 buildings which are currently housing 54 families which includes faculty members and support staff. The funding of rehabilitating the displaced families would come from the World Bank loan, but the details still have to be worked out. The other major snag in the 125 crore MUTP (Mumbai Urban Transport Project) is the rehabilitation of the 300 shops along the Adi Shankaracharya Marg in Powai. Powai Plaza is the brand new, swanky, shopping complex built by the Hiranandani Builders at Central Avenue in Powai. But convincing the shop keepers to move is going to be another Marathon task.
