India Set To Get First Univ For Petroleum Studies

GSPC plans to launch first programme by September

The Gujarat State Petroleum Corporation (GSPC) is all set to launch India’s first university dedicated to engineering and management education in the oil and gas sector.

The university will come up near Gujarat National Law University at Koba village. GSPC is negotiating with faculties of the University of Texas Austin to design its curriculum for graduate- and post-graduate level engineering courses.

It is also exploring the possibility of a similar tie-up for its proposed post-graduate management programme in the hydrocarbon sector.

“A huge jump in oil and natural gas prices in the last few years, followed by a sudden rise in exploration and production (E&P) activities worldwide, has compelled GSPC to have its own pool of educated and trained manpower to support its existing and future activities,” said D J Pandian, managing director, GSPC.

Most of the oil companies in the private- and even public sectors are facing a massive shortage of skilled manpower in the petroleum engineering and hydrocarbon sectors.

Pandian said the hit is felt more at the middle- and lower levels where there are young employees who can be easily lured by fat pay packages promises for higher positions.

Prof J P Gupta, Director General, Gujarat Energy Research & Management Institute (GERMI) promoted by GSPC for its education and research programme said: “We shortly expect a clearance from the state government allowing us to function as an autonomous university with graduate- and post-graduate programmes in engineering and management.”

GERMI plans to introduce its first programme by September this year and a campus has been built on the Ahmedabad-Gandhinagar highway by GSPC towards this end. The state-of-the-art campus is expected to be commissioned by August or September.

A former head of the Centre for Petroleum and Geosystem of University of Texas Austin is with GERMI for the design of curriculum for graduate- and post-graduate degree programmes. For on-site work experience and technical support for the engineering programmes, GSPC would be using its own in house talent, said Gupta.

Gupta, who was previously with IIT Kanpur as professor of department of chemicals engineering, said for the proposed university GSPC has allocated 17.5 acres of land for GERMI.

For the management programme, GSPC has applied for clearance to AICTE. The Letter of Intent for the hydrocarbon management programme was issued by AICTE just last week.

“The first three stages of clearances are almost through. Its just that the last phase is left where a visit by AICTE experts committee is scheduled soon for final clearance,” said Gupta.

The faculty recruitment would be the most crucial phase for the project as not many experts are available in this field with crucial on hand experience and good academic background, said Gupta.

Experiential learning will help make better engineers

Experiential learning will help make better engineers In India, there has always been a huge chasm between the industry requirements and University Learning. Engineering students after their graduation find themselves at sea when confronted with real time requirements of the industry. Though armed with the best theoretical knowledge of their subjects, the inability to relate the theoretical concepts to real world situations undermines their value in the market. National Instruments (NI), touts Experiential Learning as the next best approach to bridge the gulf between industry requirements and university learning and help engineering students iron out their deficiencies and lessen their

Battle for Brand IIT

IT was a warm sunny day in the land of dreams. Young men and women were gathered under a tree to protest against the atrocities carried out by the State; men with blaring megaphones voicing instructions, women in jeans and designer sunglasses surging politely but determinedly towards visitors for signatures on a petition that beseeched the nation's President to agree to their demands. This slightly surreal picture describes one protest rally peopled by NRIs in the richest part of the richest area of the richest country in the world. This was a Sunday afternoon in the Fair Oaks Park in

From research labs to the market

From research labs to the market If a group of scientists from Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) have their way, people could soon be driving in a hydrogen fuel cell-powered mini car that could double up as a power generator. Thats not all. Thanks to their research efforts, people could also be growing vegetables like cauliflower, cabbage, tomato and onion, in inaccessible, high altitude and snow-bound regions of the country. The DRDO-Reva hybrid vehicle combines a car built by Bangalore-based Reva Electric Car Company with a fuel cell developed by DRDO scientists. Running it could cost as little as 40

Indian Tech Quotas Irk Alumni

India's plan to boost the admissions quota to 50 per cent for lower caste groups into the country's elite Indian Institutes of Technology will "cheapen" their world-recognized brand of excellence, say IIT alumni who met in Mississauga on the weekend. "It's really a political hot potato right now," said Arjun Malhotra, co-chair of the IIT alumni's global board of directors, and CEO of Headstrong, a consulting company based in Fairfax, Va. "The alumni are upset because they feel it will dilute the brand if you interfere with the foundation of meritocracy as the way into an ITT. This is not the way

IIT-Kharagpur Ready With India First Robotic Under-Sea Vehicle

IIT-Kharagpur has developed India’s first autonomous underwater vehicle (AUV), which can bring back deep-sea images, read oceanographic data, collect water samples and perform military surveillance like pin-pointing sea mines planted by enemies. The wireless, intelligent vehicle (see photo) is fitted with a computer and can manoeuvre on its own upto 150 metres under sea for at least five hours. Unlike a remote-operated vehicle (ROV), which has to be guided by a surface platform, this vehicle is pre-programmed before it is released under sea to carry out specific tasks. Prof. Debabrata Sen of IIT-Kharagpur’s Department of Ocean Engineering and Naval Architecture is
