Indian Railways To Introduce New System To Locate Trains

The travails of travelling on the rails may soon be over after the Indian railways introduce a satellite-based tracking system to tell friends and relatives waiting for the passengers the exact location of the train on the phone or by the click of the mouse of a computer.

The IIT Kanpur and Railway Design and Stardards Organisation, Lucknow have jointly developed the Satellite Imaging for Railway Navigation (SIMRAN) system through which one can get information about a particular train, its location and expected time of arrival at the destination by using telephone or internet.

Coordinator of the project and professor of mechanical department of IIT, Kanpur N S Vyas said the railway board has approved the introduction of SIMRAN system in 15 trains initially running on Kanpur-Allahabad route.

The trial of the system has already been completed at Kanpur central railway station, he said.

The work for the new system would start within three months and the Rs two crore project would be completed in three years.

Vyas said in the first phase the system would be installed at five railway stations between Kanpur and Allahabad to monitor 15 trains while in the second phase it would be installed between Chennai and Chidambaram railway stations.

He said the devise would be installed in the railway engines which would pass on the data through GPS to computers at the railway stations. The data of the computer then would be displayed at plazma screens at railway stations.

The system would also be connected with the enquiry counter of railway stations from which one can get information about the location, arrival and departure of a particular train through telephone or internet.

New model for rural projects

New model for rural projects The Infrastructure Development Finance Company and IIT Kanpur have brought out the Sixth India Infrastructure Report with rural infrastructure as the focal theme. As expected, it has a plethora of data, best practices and reports on the current state of rural infrastructure— roads, energy, water, housing, education, healthcare and telecom—with additional inputs on financing. The report, however, could have been improved in three ways: one, it clings to the conventional view that rural development will be centred on agriculture.
