JEE Results: Everybody’s Talking About MCQ!

MCQ or multiple choice questions was introduced in the JEE for the first time this year. Most JEE toppers said this changed pattern of examination helped them score high marks.

Said Arka Aloke Bhattacharya from Don Bosco School(rank 5: JEE), “I wouldn’t have scored this well if there was no MCQ.” Arnab Bhattacharjee (rank 3), while admitting that MCQ helped, said that the announcement from the WBJEE Board came a little late. “When we came to know about the change, we were already in Class XII. However, the format is easy to adapt”, said Bhattacharjee. One of the members of the WBJEE Board, Prof Manoj Mitra, said that MCQ made correction of answer scripts easier. “But even within the MCQ pattern, there are differences. The IIT pattern is different from the WBJEE pattern”, he said.

The chairman of WBJEE Board, Prof N R Banerjea however said that from 2007, the syllabus would be rehauled in order to synchronise with the Higher Secondary syllabus.

England Chances A Lot Better Now

England's chances of doing something special in Germany are a lot better now than at the start of this tournament and for me, that is down to the system they are now employing. I hope Sven-Goran Eriksson stays with this system, opting for the right players in the right position depending on the opposition. Even though the system England had against Ecuador is talked about as one player up front, it is how your other attacking midfield players arrive to create unease in a defence which makes all the difference. Wayne Rooney arriving alone is a handful, but easy enough

Who will man the additional IITs?

In recent months at least two new institutes named as Indian Institute of Science Education and Research (IISER) modelled after IISc have been inaugurated. This is justifiable since science education and research badly needs a good boost as the country produces enough PhDs in sciences to staff these new institutions. In addition, an equally important decision has been taken in recent years, namely to open three more IITs with plans to create 20 more in the next 5-year plan. With regards to this decision, however, several questions need to be raised. Specifically, do we have enough trained and qualified manpower

Outsourcing of Indian Education

In many breathless foreign reports about India’s outsourcing clout, the nation’s education often gets high marks for being the source of so much success. But the reality is that – while in absolute numbers, with a population of a billion plus, the country is ahead of others with total graduates – Indian higher education is not responding to the challenges posed by globalization. The challenge facing India was recently on display when resident doctors and students at a premier medical school in New Delhi went on a lengthy strike. The protest targeted the government’s plan to extend existing affirmative-action admission
