MMRDA Ready With Sops To Bypass IIT Roadblock

The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) has devised a compromise formula to give impetus to the 10.3-km, six-lane Jogeshwari-Vikhroli Link Road (JVLR) project.

Work on Section 2 of the project, on a 3-km stretch between Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Powai, and Kanjurmarg, had been moving at a snail’s pace because of the IIT’s reluctance to release 10,000 sq-mt land. The MMRDA has now proposed special compensation for the IIT to take the project ahead.

JVLR is one of two road overbridges being constructed under the World Bank-aided Mumbai Urban Transport Project (MUTP). The MMRDA wants the IIT land because the 1.2-km Adi Shankaracharya Road is barely 25 to 40 metres wide as against the planned width of about 50 metres for the six-lane road.

“We have worked out a special compensation for the IIT if it agrees to part with its land,” said Milind Maishkar, the new joint commissioner of MMRDA and MUTP project director. “The MMRDA will reconstruct two buildings that would be affected by the widening of the road (location already identified by IIT) and set up facilities like drainage and water pipes.”

Besides, the MMRDA would also construct two subways-one outside the IIT main gate and the other a short distance away at the market gate, Maishkar said. The IIT board will consider the proposal in its meeting on June 26.

Special compensation

MMRDA has proposed special compensation for IIT if the institute parts with 10,000 sqmt of land.

The compensation is estimated to be worth Rs5 crore

The plan includes construction of two subways, 50 metres wide, outside the main gate and the adjoining market gate of the IIT.

In addition, an equally important decision has been taken in recent years, namely to open three more IITs with plans to create 20 more in the next 5-year plan. With regards to this decision, however, several questions need to be raised. Specifically, do we have enough trained and qualified manpower
