Protesting IIT Students Confined To Campus

HUGE police deployment at the Indian Institute of Technology, Kanpur (IIT-K) to prevent any untoward incident during a mass hunger strike called by students turned the campus into a khaki garrison today.

In spite of a ban imposed by the district administration, the students had called the hunger strike, to intensify their agitation against the quota hike for OBCs.

Hundreds of students had gathered at the IIT campus gate to proceed to Phoolbagh, the site identified for the strike. However, the police did not allow even a single student to move out of campus, which also led to a scuffle that left many students with minor scratches and wounds.

The ongoing agitation within the campus has been temporarily suspended after the police action, but the students have planned to organise a national-level symposium within a fortnight.

Leading the agitation under the banner of Forum of India against Reservation (FIR), Omendra Singh said they would meet IIT-K Director S.G. Dhande and demand a written apology from the district administration. “We will move court if the apology is not tendered within 24 hours,” he added.

On the issue of planning mass hunger strike despite ban, he said the letter received from the administration was contradictory and its contents quoting apex court were false. Stating that public meeting is not illegal and people have the right to freedom of expression, the administration’s action was questionable.

Sources said the faculty members, who were claiming to be supporting students over the reservation issue, did not turn up for the strike after the administration issued the ban.

On future strategy, Singh said a decision would be taken at a national-level meeting being held in Bangalore — IIT-K representative Chandrashekhar Sharma is attending the meeting.

Another agitating FIR member said the lunch-time dharna would continue till a new strategy is planned.

About today’s incident, Nutan Gautam of IIT-K said policemen did not consider that they were dealing with students and not criminals. “Even after some students were injured, the police continued to apply force on them,” she added.

Circle officer Gyanenjaya Singh, who was present during the incident, refused to comment on the issue.
