Silver Whistle Favored in Stars and Stripes BC

Stronach Stables’ Silver Whistle, most recently fifth in the Grade I Manhattan Handicap at Belmont Park June 10, looks to return to his winning ways in Sunday’s $200,000 Stars and Stripes Breeders’ Cup Turf (gr. IIIT), Arlington’s traditional Fourth of July weekend headliner.

Silver Whistle is the 5-2 morning-line favorite in a field of eight slated to start in the 1 1/2-mile grass marathon.

Earlier this year, Silver Whistle, a 4-year-olds son of Alphabet Soup, was up in the final strides to win the Pan American Handicap (gr. IIIT) at Gulfstream Park April 1. Like the Stars and Stripes, the Pan American is contested at the 12-furlong distance.

A winner of three of 10 starts, Silver Whistle is trained by Bill Mott and will be ridden for the first time by Robby Albarado. Silver Whistle was assigned 116 pounds.

Also exiting the Manhattan is Trillum Stable’s Dreadnaught, trained by Thomas Voss. A 6-year-old Lac Ouimet gelding, Dreadnaught has won six of 26 races and has career earnings approaching a half a million dollars. Though winless in three starts this year, he was second, beaten only a head by Better Talk Now in the Dixie Stakes (gr. IIT) at Pimlico on the Preakness (gr. I) card May 20.

Dreadnaught is a graded stakes winner at the Stars and Stripes distance, capturing Calder’s W. L. McKnight Handicap (gr. IIT) in 2004. Dreadnaught is top-weighted at 118 pounds and will have the riding services of Jean-Luc Samyn.

Dynalympic also shows a win at 1 1/2 miles, capturing a third-level allowance race at Keeneland in April. The son of Dynaformer is trained by Tom Amoss, who has thrice won the Stars and Stripes, taking the 1994 running with Marastani, the 1997 renewal with Lakeshore Road, and the 2000 edition with Williams News.

MCQ or multiple choice questions was introduced in the JEE for the first time this year. Most JEE toppers said this changed pattern of examination helped them score high marks. Said Arka Aloke Bhattacharya from Don Bosco School(rank 5: JEE), “I wouldn’t have scored this well if there was no MCQ.” Arnab Bhattacharjee (rank 3), while admitting that MCQ helped, said that the announcement from the WBJEE Board came a little late. “When we came to know about the change, we were already in Class XII. However, the format is easy to adapt”, said Bhattacharjee. One of the members of

Globetrotting for Seminars

Second year MBA at VGSOM, IIT Kharagpur Amandeep Singh recounts what it takes to be invited to the Harvard College Asian Business Forum. It’s amazing how expectations and perceptions can take a 180 degree twist when you probe just a little deeper from the surface. As in all b-schools, the group mail can either be Pandora’s Box or the lost treasure of Genghis Khan. I came across an email asking me to participate in the Harvard College Asian Business Forum (HCABF). My first impression – Eh? Harvard in India? I wondered if this was another one of the gimmicks by

IIT-Kharagpur Ready With India First Robotic Under-Sea Vehicle

IIT-Kharagpur has developed India’s first autonomous underwater vehicle (AUV), which can bring back deep-sea images, read oceanographic data, collect water samples and perform military surveillance like pin-pointing sea mines planted by enemies. The wireless, intelligent vehicle (see photo) is fitted with a computer and can manoeuvre on its own upto 150 metres under sea for at least five hours. Unlike a remote-operated vehicle (ROV), which has to be guided by a surface platform, this vehicle is pre-programmed before it is released under sea to carry out specific tasks. Prof. Debabrata Sen of IIT-Kharagpur’s Department of Ocean Engineering and Naval Architecture is

England Chances A Lot Better Now

England's chances of doing something special in Germany are a lot better now than at the start of this tournament and for me, that is down to the system they are now employing. I hope Sven-Goran Eriksson stays with this system, opting for the right players in the right position depending on the opposition. Even though the system England had against Ecuador is talked about as one player up front, it is how your other attacking midfield players arrive to create unease in a defence which makes all the difference. Wayne Rooney arriving alone is a handful, but easy enough
