Suspended Ex-NITIE Director, Tapan Bagchi Cleared of ChargesSuspended Ex-NITIE Director, Tapan Bagchi Cleared of Charges Dr Tapan Bagchi (60) a graduate of IIT Kanpur,a Ph D in Operations Research, 16 years with Exxon-Mobil, 19 years in academics and a poet at heart was once upon a time the Director of the neighboring NITIE (National Institute of Industrial Engineering). Now, has been exonerated of the charges which got him suspended from this plum post. He was suspended from the directorship of NITIE in Sept 2004 for alleged hurling of casteist remarks on a computer programmer Vijay Nanwane of NITIE. Nanwane, a SC took offence of this and reported the matter to Police sometime in July 04. Speedy action was initiated by the intervention of SC & ST Welfare Association. Sanjay Sukhane the assocn chief pressurized the police to arrest him. Bagchi was arrested and released the same day. Subsequently, the vested interest groups issued death threat against Prof Bagchi, for their interests would not materialize otherwise. This is the time when the IIT fraternity saw it fit for Bagchi not sweat it at NITIE. He returned to IIT Kanpur directly to save his life, nothing short of it. Sometime last year, the Ministry of Human Resource and Development exonerated him of the charges and revoked his suspension order for reinstatement with retrospective effect. It is learnt that well-known parties conspired against Director Bagchi and fabricated falsified SC/ST atrocities charges against him in an FIR filed at the Powai police in the summer of 2004. The trial that followed defeated those who had charged him, and then sequentially the Bombay City Court, the Special SC/ST Court, Mumbai, and finally the Division Bench of the High Court found the charges fabricated and quashed that FIR early in 2005. In a written last week to Planet Powai he maintained, I was never sacked from the directorship of NITIE as erroneously reported in your news item published in 2004. Thereupon Prof Bagchi was reinstated to the Directorship at NITIE by the Ministry of Human Resource Development, and by the Board of Directors, NITIE. The Chairman board of governors of NITIE Dr WR Sherekar invited him to join the position at Powai. However, the technocrat did not find it comfortable to resume the position and decided to opt in favor of the present Director of NITIE Dr Athawle to continue with the position.
