Transforming lives

Winners don’t do different things, they do things differently — this line has changed the lives of thousands of people across the country. Shiv Khera, motivation guru and author of the book You Can Win has been helping people around the world through his books and lectures in realising their full potential.

Khera was in the city on Thursday and shed some light on the experiences which inspired him to create the motivational tools to ignite human spirit.

“I have been in the USA for the past 30 years. I met some people much wiser than me, who also gave me guidance and advice on how to live life,” he says. During this time, he also attended lectures by celebrated motivational guru Norman Vincent Peale, whose teachings left an indelible imprint on his mind. The lectures made him realise that problems usually lie within people themselves. “It also dawned on me that problems are a sign of life. Till the time we are alive, problems will plague us. We can’t solve all of them, but we can learn to handle them,” says Khera. Once this realisation came in, he decided to share his attitudinal beliefs with other people. In the process, he immersed himself in research, started reading a lot and meeting people from different walks of life. As a result, his life transformed personally, professionaly and socially. “I then started volunteering my time in maximum security prisons in the US and I saw people’s lives change,” he says. Another testimony of how inspiring his books and lectures are can be gauged by the fact that a young boy from Pune came up to him and said, “I was inspired by your book and got into IIT.”

His two other books— Living With Honour and Freedom Is Not Free— have also received great response from the readers. Khera has eight more books planned with Macmillan to be released this year.

“I am also coming up with programmes for school teachers and students,” he concludes.
