Tutor Claiming To Be Iitian Turns Out To Be FraudA PRIVATE tutor in Subhanpura, Devesh Bharadwaj, who claimed to be a gold medallist from IIT Delhi, was found to be lying about his credentials. Bharadwaj used to conduct tuition classes for IIT, AIEEE, BITSAT and other similar entrance exams, and Class 11 and 12 science subjects. A vigilant parent discovered from IIT Delhi that no one by that name had ever passed out from the institute. Pratyush Gupta, the son of Saket Gupta, had joined Bharadwaj’s Einstein Personal Tution last September for preparations related to IIT and other engineering entrance exams. ‘‘We consulted Bharadwaj after seeing his advertisement in an English daily. He had taken Rs 20,000 for the preparations, and then after two months, he vanished for over a month. My son could not clear any of the exams,’’ said Saket Gupta. While Gupta insisted on a refund of fees from Bharadwaj, the latter refused to pay. Gupta then made inquiries with IIT Delhi about the authencity of Bharadwaj’s claims of being a gold medallist from the institute. ‘‘He claims to be an aircraft pilot, too but behaved in an unruly manner with us. I doubted his credentials as a gold medallist and informed the institution. The institution wrote back to me saying that no such person had ever passed out from IIT Delhi,’’ said Gupta. A copy of the letter from IIT Delhi and Bhardwaj’s visiting card, which mentions that he was a gold medalist and his wife Smita was a BE from MS University, are in possession with Newsline. Following the revelation, Bhardwaj shut down his coaching classes and shifted it elsewhere from the Akashganga Apartment premises in Subhanpura in June. Within a week after he vanished from Subhanpura, this reporter tracked him down and found him operating out of Amar Complex on Gotri-Vasna road as ‘Einstein Classes’. On Tuesday, when Bhardwaj was appraoched, he denied all the charges. Smita Bhardwaj claimed to be the owner of the coaching centre and said her husband was the manager. The couple claimed that their fees were one-fifth of what others professional tution classes charged. ‘‘We are dedicated, hardworking teachers. We had devoted extra time for Pratyush and other students. His father threatened with dire consequences if we did not return the Rs 19,000 fees. How are we to be held responsible if the student does not clear an examination? We did not offer any guarantee,’’ said Smita Bhardwaj. Asked about his qualification, Bharadwaj said, ‘‘I am qualified as a physics teacher and my students say I am better than their school teachers. No, I am not an IITian. So what? So many non-IITians are running classes. I did not print that visiting card, nor any advertisement stating that I am a gold medallist. Students and parents say a lot of things on a hearsay basis. Currently, our coaching class does have someone with an MSc from IIT Kharagpur as a teacher.’’ In spite of repeated queries, Devesh refused to disclose his actual qualifications. ‘‘This is a private tution, not a government job that I have to disclose my qualifications,’’ he said. When contacted, Deputy Registrar of IIT Delhi Anil K Monga said that though they had promised suitable action against the offender, the onus of registering a police complaint is with the parents. ‘‘But such imposters should be exposed beacuse they are encashing on the name of a reputed institute. Your coverage might expose him locally and make unsuspecting parents aware, but people like Bhardwaj have not caused any direct damage to our institution. Plus, it will be difficult for us to follow up the case from here,’’ said Monga. Source : http://cities.expressindia.com/
