Yate’s Black Cat Tries Luck in Jefferson Cup

Yate’s Black Cat had to win three times before he officially made it to the winner’s circle, but he is favored to make a quick return in Saturday’s $200,000-added Jefferson Cup (gr. IIT) for 3-year-olds at nine furlongs on the Churchilll Downs turf.

The son of Black Minnaloushe was disqualified from maiden victories at Hawthorne Park and Gulfstream Park before he finally took a Churchill downs allowance race to officially score his first career victory for trainer Dale Romans.

Yate’s Black Cat is the 5-2 morning line choice over six Jefferson Cup rivals. Those opponents include the Todd Pletcher-trained Tahoe Warrior, who finished third in Keeneland’s Forerunner, and Mill House’s Brilliant (4-1), a Neil Howard-trained son of War Chant who is unbeaten on the grass after winning a pair of allowance races on Churchill Downs’ Matt Winn Turf Course.

Making his turf debut is Mike McCarty’s Storm Treasure (4-1), a Steve Asmussen-trained son of Storm Boot who finished 11th to Barbaro in the Kentucky Derby presented by Yum! Brands (gr. I) and was runner-up to Sinister Minister in the Toyota Blue Grass (gr. I) at Keeneland. Shaun Bridgmohan will ride Storm Treasure.

Other Jefferson Cup contenders include Mercurious (9-2), Obi Wan Kenobi (6-1) and Act of God (20-1)

Search for Space for IIT at Andhra Pradesh

Hyderabad, March 1 (IANS) A central team will visit Medak district of Andhra Pradesh on March 11 to identify the location for a proposed Indian Institute of Technology (IIT). The district authorities have short-listed three villages for the institute in Sangareddy, about 70 km from Hyderabad. Out of the three, government land is available only near Lakadram village. Officials said if the central team selects any other location, the government might have to acquire private land.
